Genevieve Waller, The Dark Manner: Soft and Hard, 2021

October 17, 6pm

Join us for a conversation with Genevieve Waller about her piece The Dark Manner, on view in CVA’s 965 Project Gallery. Through this work, Waller explores and subverts masculine aesthetics, celebrating Queer desire and female visibility.

Genevieve Waller (she/her) is an artist and scholar who creates photograms (cameraless photographs), sculpture, installations, and drawings that deal with excess, substitution, transparency, and the status of everyday objects. She researches and writes about the aesthetic of camp, the history of LGBTQ+ culture, film, modern and contemporary art, and popular music. Originally from Wichita, Kansas, she received a B.A. in art history from Wichita State University, an M.F.A. in photography and art history from Ohio University, and an M.A. in visual and cultural studies from the University of Rochester. She spent a year in Berlin, Germany as a Fulbright grantee and for many years has been a college radio DJ. Currently, she resides in Denver, Colorado where she is the founder and editor of the art journal DARIA: Denver Art Review, Inquiry, and Analysis.

Supernova: Anthologies of becoming

October 24, 7:30pm

The MSU Denver Dance Program and the MSU Denver Center for Visual Art present Supernova: Anthologies of becoming. This interdisciplinary performance event is inspired by works and themes featured in CVA’s Dance of Resistance exhibition. Students in the Interdisciplinary Performance course engage with the stunning artworks in the exhibition in this immersive, multidisciplinary performance event that they co-created as a collective. Supernova explores our human experiences of conformity and our fight for individual freedom, as we spiral towards the dream of becoming unapologetically ourselves. Loosely based on the work and life experience of ancient Greek poet, Sappho, the performers become modern day “mythweavers,” offering an invitation for the audience to experience soul-stitching storytelling in real time. Supernova weaves new truths, new beginnings, and pathways to healing, letting stars scatter, align, and shine the way they want to.

Please join us for this unique event, which is part of an ongoing series of collaborations between the MSU Denver dance program and the Center for Visual Art. Supernova is free and open to the public, but space is limited, so please register in advance to reserve a spot.

Art District on Santa Fe First Friday Art Walk
First Friday of every month, 6-8pm

The First Friday Art Walks are the signature event of Denver’s Art District on Santa Fe. All year round, rain or shine, the District comes alive on the first Friday of each month as thousands of visitors descend upon Santa Fe Drive to view art from hundreds of artists in galleries, studios, co-ops, upstairs, downstairs, in alleys, on the street—everywhere!

On First Fridays, CVA always has something fun happening, whether it’s vendors and cultural partners in the parking lot, fantastic exhibitions in the galleries, or art-making activities in the classroom, there’s something for everyone!
